Product Description

STEINEL IR 180 KNX V3.1 is a white concealed-wall presence detector that combines passive infrared detection, room brightness measurement and a programmable manual pushbutton. It is intended for offices, corridors, stairwells, ancillary rooms and washrooms equipped with KNX building automation. The detector helps coordinate lighting with occupancy and available daylight, while temperature and humidity readings can serve separate building-control functions. This listing is specifically for article 058463. COM1 relay and DALI versions sharing a similar exterior are separate products with different electrical connections.

The passive infrared system responds to changes in heat radiation from moving objects. Its 180° detection angle covers the room in front of the wall-mounted sensor. For this article, STEINEL specifies tangential movement detection up to r = 12 m, with radial movement and presence coverage up to r = 4 m. These figures describe different movement conditions. Walking across the detection sectors can be detected farther away than walking directly towards the sensor or making small movements at a desk. When planning a workstation, use the presence figure rather than the maximum walking range. Walls and glass obstruct infrared detection, so the sensor does not monitor a neighbouring room through a partition.

Install the detector at a height of 1–1.2 m, ideally 1.2 m, using concealed wiring and a suitable wall installation box. The front measures 80 × 80 mm and total depth is 50 mm. The plastic housing is white RAL 9010. Select a position with a clear view of the relevant room area, keeping the sensor away from obstructions such as tall cabinets or an open door leaf. The manufacturer recommends at least one metre between the IR sensor and a light fitting whose heat could trigger detection. Its IP20 rating is intended for indoor use; installation conditions must match the protection rating and the stated 0–40 °C ambient temperature range.

This KNX version takes its power from the 21–30 V KNX bus and includes a bus coupling. It must not be connected to 230 V as though it were a conventional wall switch. A separate compatible KNX actuator operates the lighting circuit, and dimming additionally requires a suitable actuator and compatible luminaire or driver. The detector has four logical lighting channels, not four physical mains relays. ETS configuration supports switching commands, dimming values, basic brightness and constant-lighting control. The actual lighting behaviour also depends on the actuator capabilities, group-address assignments and the configuration selected for the installation.

The brightness threshold can be set within 2–1000 lx and the lighting-channel stay-on time within 1–255 minutes; an IQ mode is also available. The integrated pushbutton can be assigned to the appropriate lighting group or another supported KNX command in ETS. Temperature, humidity and presence information can contribute to room automation, for example linking occupancy with ventilation where the necessary control equipment is installed. Functions and parameters are enabled by the KNX application, so a complete system design is required to achieve the intended result. After installation, test entry from different directions, detection at the workstation, manual operation and the selected switch-off delay. Optional RC6, RC7 and Smart Remote accessories are separate purchases. They provide additional ways to access supported settings, while the KNX power supply, bus wiring, programming and appropriate actuators remain essential parts of the system.

In addition to occupancy-based lighting, the KNX application provides a separate photocell controller function that operates independently of whether people are present. This separate output has a 10–2000 lx threshold. It sends a bus command when the measured room brightness falls below the selected value, with an external KNX actuator still handling the connected load. Its threshold should therefore be distinguished from the 2–1000 lx occupancy-lighting threshold.
